Aloha. Chair Kierkiewicz and members of the County Council,
I am writing in support of the Kumu Hou development at Waikoloa Beach Resort. I
am currently a resident of the Vistas at Waikoloa. I have watched the public
testimony and Waikoloa Land Company"s presentation on these two bills over the
course of the last few hearings and would life to present a few thoughts for you to
consider.
I have been impressed with the willingness of the developer to work with the County
in thinking of solutions to responsibly manage tourism in the right resort areas while
also giving back to our community with some very significant commitments through
.providing affordable housing and funds to help the Waikoloa Foundation. I urge you
to strongly consider approving the :Mumu Hou project. Without the approval of the
Kumu Hou development, we would be left with nine holes of golf course brown and
abandoned, the promise of preserving open space forsaken, which could lead to more
golf course being abandoned, no affordable housing that our island workers so
desperately need and most importantly you would be turning down a $40 million
dollar endowment to the Waikoloa.Foundation which would help build a much-
needed cultural center at our resort!
Also, can Waikoloa Land Company still develop on some of these parcels as
previously zoned? I am not sure what is approved currently for this land but without
the need for county approval many of these added community benefits will never see
the light of day. It seems it would be more beneficial to all work together and reach a
common goal.
We are all sensitive to an increase in tourism and ensuring that our community grows
in more sustainable ways, but I believe this new model for regenerative tourism that
Waikoloa Land has presented could be used as an example for future development
projects across the state. This is not quid pro quo as I heard one council member state,
but a developer actually trying to do the right thing for once.
