STATEMENT OF THE ILWU LOCAL 142 ON THE NOMINATION OF
MICHAEL DELA CRUZ TO THE HAWAII PLANNING COMMISSION
The ILWU Local 142 testifies in strong support of confirming the nomination of Michael
Dela Cruz to the Hawaii Planning Commission. The ILWU Local 142 is a labor union of
workers in the Longshore,Tourism,Agriculture,and General Trades industries.
Michael knows firsthand the struggles of working people on Hawaii Island and the ways
that infrastructure and planning impact the lives of workers. He is an active member of
the community in Waikoloa,freely giving his labor to highway and park cleanups and
volunteering as a coach. As a longtime hotel worker,Michael became someone that his
co-workers went to when they needed help or had a concern about the workplace. He
was elected as a Business Agent,leading workers into negotiations and working on
resolving workplace issues. He understands the struggle to find affordable housing near
work and how much that impacts not just workers,but their whole family and
community.
Michael has a demonstrated commitment to community service. He has spent years
bringing people from diverse backgrounds together to work towards the common good.
He is rooted in Hawaii Island and the community and will make an outstanding addition
to the Hawaii County Planning Commission.
