RE: Communication 667, Nomination of Michael Dela Cruz to the Leeward Planning Commission Pa >
1-4
Aloha,
To begin, thank you for working to uplift our state during the pandemic. I am writing to you today in support
of Michael Dela Cruz's appointment to the Leeward Planning Commission.
An effective economy uplifts the voices of workers. Too often, our government prioritizes the interests of
the business community at the expense of the workers on whom our economy depends. As we exit the
pandemic, we must refocus our commitment to putting people's needs before corporate greed.
Michael Dela Cruz has a long background in Hawai'i Island's labor movement. A business agent with the
ILWU Local 142, Michael has steadfastly championed the well-being of our community's workforce,
including better pay, long-term financial security, and the benefits necessary to maintain individual and
public health. He has also fought to ensure that our county develops an economy that responds to local
needs, rather than merely boosting the bottom line of mainland companies that seek to use our
neighborhoods to generate offshore profits.
Additionally, Michael has been a strong community leader, who has spent years serving our most
vulnerable residents and our keiki. He has volunteered with the Ironman Triathlon and Highway and Park
cleanups. He also serves as a coach for youth soccer teams and the North Hawai'i Little League
Association. He is dedicated to advancing the aspirations of our keiki and creating a future in which they
are empowered to become the innovators that craft a better tomorrow for us all.
As always, mahalo for your commitment to the common good.
Sincerely,
(D-5, Na'alehu, Ocean View, Captain Cook, Kealakekua, Kailua-Kona)
