Aloha Council Members,
I regret to inform you that I've been called off-island for work-related travel through the week of April 11 and
will be unable to attend the FY 22-23 Departmental Budget and Program Review conducted by the Special
Finance Committee. However,Managing Director Lee Lord and Finance Director Deanna Sako will attend in
my stead.
In short,our proposed budget that will be before you in my absence represents our departments'best efforts to
meet our residents'needs quickly and responsibly while striving to maintain the level of services our residents
deserve. Each investment reflected in the budget is critical to the future of the County of Hawaii,and we look
forward to working closely with the Hawaii County Council as we prepare a responsible budget that accounts
for those we serve and those who serve us—past,present,and future.
Additionally,sustainability remains a core theme of our administration as we continually strive for a Hawaii
Island where our keiki can thrive and succeed.
Over the past year and a half,we have worked tirelessly to bring awareness to the sustainable actions happening
here on our island.Through that effort,we hosted the first-ever County of Hawaii Sustainability Summit,
organized a TEDx event that was featured at COP26,and created the Mayor's Sustainability Awards to support
and promote amazing organizations across our island.
This year, I have been offered a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to speak about our island home's great works at a
pre-event reception at the Our Ocean Conference in Palau,and I cannot pass it up. Invited by President Whipps,
I will be the sole speaker from Hawaii and intend to do everything I can to further uplift our island,our culture,
and our people in a broader effort to bring vital resources back to our County to help us in our mission to create
a vibrant,thriving, and sustainable Hawaii Island where our keiki can thrive and succeed.
