Subject: Support of Bill 152 and 153
I am in support in the passing of Bills 152 and 153. I have seen many working people just get slammed by the
housing/rental shortages in Kona for many years now. In these times more will be homeless or will leave
Hawaii. Working folks.
I have seen so many homes in residential neighborhoods turned over to vacation rentals along with my property taxes
rising almost every year. You need to pass a more stringent vacation rental bill, like 41 on Oahu. I have seen a
proposal to develop the property around my residence to three acre lots with large luxury homes on lands with many
Hawaiian artifacts, some were not even mapped (so they could be grubbed over). No mention was made for
affordable housing in this development proposal. Maybe a moratorium on luxury homes and resorts too? The Big
Island is not far behind the situation on Oahu. Rental prices are now even higher than in Honolulu! I would also ask
that you consider older folks too, retired people on fixed incomes with rising property taxes. I was told there was a
3% cap per year. Does my pension or social security rise 3% annually? Not! With an average lifespan in retirement
of 63-83 years, it would be a potential of a 60% increase with no matching increase in retirement incomes. Elderly
homeless on the rise. Think about the model of growth in tourism that has been Hawaii for decades, it is not
working. We will have the rich and the poor on government assistance and no in between.
