Aloha Hawaii County Council Members,
I strongly urge the county council not pass Resolution 363-22.
Yes, the cost of gasoline has skyrocketed, but this is not a good reason to reduce
the county's fuel tax 10 cents. If this decrease is authorized, the county will
have defer resurfacing of county roads. This will cost more in the long run than
any short term cost savings. Those long term costs include additional vehicle
repair expenses incurred because of poor roadway conditions.
The proposed resolution states the county can seek grants to back fill any
shortfalls. This is not a viable solution. These grant programs are usually very
competitive with other jurisdictions, and won't be a long term solution for any
decreases in the fuel tax.
Neil Azevedo's county paving crews have done a great job maintaining our county
roads. If this tax is reduced, it will hamstrung his efforts to maintain the
county's roadway infrastructure.
