Re: Res.363-22 Authorizing a decrease in the County of Hawaii fuel tax
Our company has been in the business of trucking freight to our customers around the Island of Hawaii
for over 80 years. In 2021, our team of over 100 employees drove (collectively) a total of 2 million miles,
requiring the purchase of 360,000 gallons of diesel fuel. We support a reduction in fuel tax. The
reduction will help to off-set a portion of the recent increases in our fuel costs.
Some of our employees commute to work from the outlying areas of Puna, Waimea and Naalehu. The
decrease in the fuel tax will help reduce their commuting costs.
Decreasing the fuel tax will lessen the monies available for our highways however,due to the negative
financial burdens placed upon our community from the COVID episodes, I feel that the move to
decrease the fuel tax and thereby keeping that money in the hands of residents and companies is the
urgent and the best path for our community.
