By*_ Date MAY 1 6 Aloha council members, I apologize for not knowing the bill(s)number in question re upcoming budget discussions. However, I have the opportunity to write to you now after just reading the local newspaper yesterday with its report of a decreased tax rate on luxury, second homes. We have what appears to be a daily increase of houseless, hopeless people living on our streets and in the bushes; people without healthcare or a decent education; beach parks and other critical public areas in total disrepair, covid past and currently ravaging our people and their economic lives —and that's just the tip of the iceberg of our island's social, cultural, and environmental challenges. If it wasn't a typo, whoever initiated a bill to decrease the responsibility of the richest among us to help fix our society's most pressing issues is either a madman/woman, heartless, ignorant, sold out —or all of the above. Increasing the tax burden on luxury second homes is how a sane society should expect its front page news budget story to read. Please insure that those who are most able to contribute to our society's social, cultural, and environmental balance are the ones who proportionately do so, i.e, a far greater rate than the other 98% of us.
