I'm a UK resident so probably can't have much, if any, influence over your up coming bill 167 to ban non-mineral sunscreens. But, I wanted to highlight the international nature of our problem. I've been researching eco-friendly sunscreens myself just this weekend and have bought a couple of brands to try,the most affordable of which was£14("'$17),for a small 150g tin. Compared to 200m1 bottles of sunscreen which kills our planet which you can buy for around£6. The problem seems to be that while laws allow companies to sell environmentally damaging products, all the risk sits on those companies willing to spend money on R&D for more sustainable and eco-friendly products. If the law changes to ban harmful substances, companies will be forced to develop new products, giving an advantage to those who've taken the early risk in doing so. Being Hawaii'ans, I'm sure your understanding of ocean eco-systems far outweighs mine, so I don't want to lecture or patronise on the value of coral reefs and health ocean systems,sea-grasses,areas for ocean species to breed safely etc. But do want to say, your ecision could potentially knock-on,or be used by environmentalists such as myself to hold as a record and example of what we can do when we make decisions based on environmental outcomes. Some crazy folks say these laws are a hinderance to companies and profits. Those people are usually the ones making money from the existing laws. But really, these kinds of laws and regulations are pro-capitalism,giving innovative thinkers and risk- takers the opportunity to take a positive idea and create a commercially viable product from it. One which does not cost our planet for the sake of the health of our skin. While not a resident of the US or Hawaii I want to submit this testimony in strong favour of Bill 167. Regardless of its outcome, I wish you the best of luck in addressing the many environmental issues you're facing directly, and indirectly.
