I am writing in support of Bill 167 and all legislative action that will reduce the concentrations of chgmicg. /
filters in Hawaiian waters.
Hawaii has set the global standard in promoting responsible tourism and sunscreen usage, and it is rt' hope this
tradition will continue.
I am the founder and formulator of Stream2Sea, an environmentally friendly product line formulated without using
oxybenzone or any other chemical UV filter that is known or suspected to harm the coral reef environment. A
cosmetic chemist with more than 20 years experience formulating natural products, and an avid scuba diver and
instructor, I created Stream2Sea because I knew we could formulate effective, consumer friendly products to
protect ourselves while not harming our precious underwater resources. Our products which include an
aesthetically pleasing and highly effective SPF 45 can be found at ecoconscious retailers throughout Hawaii including
health food stores, dive centers, art galleries and non-profit locations.
We use only non-nano titanium dioxide and non-nano zinc oxide as our active ingredients in our sunscreens. Our
formulas are biobased and have been independently tested by FDA-validated labs to meet or exceed FDA standards
for SPF, broad spectrum and water resistance claims. Our products are both effective and cost comparative with
other performance-based sport sunscreens, without the potential negative environmental effects. Based on
increased awareness, consumers are now actively looking for eco-friendly and ocean safe non-nano mineral based
sunscreens like those offered by Stream2Sea, and travelling to locations that promote sustainable choices.
I applaud the Hawaiian legislature for expanding on this issue as science continues to prove the detrimental effects
of these ingredients for people and planet.
Again, I fully support your efforts. Coastal communities around the world are closely watching this legislation. If I can
