Subject: Bill 167
Dear Hawaii County Council, Chair Rebecca Villegas, Co-Chair Heather Kimball, and members of the Committee on
Climate Resilience &Natural Management:
The coral reefs around the Big Island of Hawaii have suffered due to global warming, runoff from storms and from
the sun screen toxins that we use to protect ourselves from sunburn. The area that we can most directly have a positive
and most immediate effect is in the control of sun screen toxins. Please vote to restrict the use of non-mineral based
sun screens. Coral reefs are essential for the life we live in Hawaii. They protect the shore line with a physical barrier.
They provide food for subsistence gatherers. They provide jobs for those who work in the tourist industry. They
provide physical and mental recreation for the population of Hawaii. We need to protect the reefs in fiery way
possible.
