Subject: Support bill 167 sunscreen ban
Aloha,
My name is Kayleigh Grant&I am the owner of an ocean eco tourism company called KaimanaOceanSafari.com. At
Kaimana we work diligently to make sure our guests are only wearing zinc ¬ harmful chemicals into the water to
protect the reef. Unfortunately, all chemicals in sunscreen are harmful for the reef& also the humans that wear it.
Many of these ingredients are cancer causing chemicals & are also causing the deterioration of our reefs. Many people
believe they are purchasing a product that is safe for them &the reefs however, many of these products are able to
claim they are reef friendly when they truly are not. This is called green washing & is allowed because in Hawaii we
have banned one ingredient, oxybenzone, when there are still other harmful chemical ingredients that are not yet
banned. So even though scientifically these products are not reef friendly, they can claim to be since legally they are
missing the banned ingredient. It is imperative we ban the remaining chemicals in sunscreen in Hawaii and only allow
mineral sunscreens! If'we don't act now,the reef will be destroyed for the future generations! It is our responsibility
to malama the ocean! It has endured so much &we are at a tipping point! Please pass bill 167 to ban non mineral
sunscreen sales in Hawaii! The ocean&the residents of Hawaii beg you to make the right choice.
