Subject: Bill 167
Healthy coral reefs protect our island's coastal infrastructure, beaches and communities. The chemical compounds
contained in non-mineral sunscreen inhibit coral growth and degrade the integrity of our reefs. As I do volunteer time
down at Kahalu'u Bay with Reef Teach, I find that most people accept the misinformation used in advertising (reef
friendly, organic, fish friendly)to be assurance that they are buying a reef safe product. These are advertising lies and
people are dismayed that they were misled. I understand that the proposed ordinance, Bill 167, aims to preserve the
health, safety and welfare of humans and the environment by allowing only mineral sunscreen to be provided, sold,
offered for sale, or distributed in the county. I submit my testimony in strong support of Bill 167, Mahalo.
