Subject: SUPPORT for Bill 167
May 12, 2022
Dear Hawai`i County Council Chair Rebecca Villegas, Co-Chair Heather Kimball, and members of the Committee on
Climate Resilience &Natural Management,
Healthy coral reefs protect our island's coastal infrastructure, beaches, and community. The chemical compounds
contained in non-mineral sunscreen inhibit coral growth and degrade the integrity of our reefs. This ordinance aims to
preserve the health, safety, and welfare of humans and the environment by allowing only mineral sunscreens to be
provided, sold, offered for sale, or distributed in the County.
The toxic chemicals in the sunscreens don't only harm the reefs but the organisms inside the reefs. Such as fish,
shellfish, and other creatures. And lots of people use fish as their main food source, and money income. Other people
also use the creatures for religious reasons.
I submit my testimony in strong support of Bill 167.
