Subject: Direct Testimony In Favor of Bill 167
Healthy coral reefs protect Hawaii's coastal ecosystem, infrastructure, and community. The chemical
compounds contained in non-mineral sunscreens are absolutely awful for coral reefs. Despite this, many
non-mineral sunscreens advertising themselves as 'reef friendly' contain harmful ingredients that can
bleach coral in a matter of days. This is because the international standard for what constitutes 'reef-safe'
is far too narrow, and does not cover any of the many hormone disruptors in sunscreen proven to be
harmful to coral reefs. Bill 167 aims to preserve the health, safety; and welfare of humans and the
environment by allowing only mineral sunscreens to be provided, sold, offered for sale, or distributed in the
County. I'm submitting this testimony in favor of Bill 167, because I think safeguarding the health of Hawai'i
and its coral are absolutely vital.
