Subject: Support for Bill 167
To Chair Rebecca Villegas, Co-Chair Heather Kimball, and members of the Committee on Climate Resilience and Natural
Management:
I am writing to urge you to support Bill 167, regarding the prohibition of non-mineral sunscreen. I am a resident of California
who has visited the Big Island almost every year since my first trip here in 1995. I am not at all wealthy, but my travel fund has
almost always gone to this unique and lovely island.
Hawaii's coral reefs are a remarkable and priceless resource that need our protection, particularly from damage by human
beings. I must tell you, that coming here after not visiting during the COVID shutdown, was truly eye opening. The reefs that I
have visited year after year had done so well in the absence for the huge number of visitors wearing harmful sunscreens! As a
survivor of skin cancer, I know that I can protect myself in ways that are not going to harm the reef. But I have had to do my
own research for years. I think many tourists, like myself, would very much appreciate the state prohibiting any product that
will damage the coral reef.
A healthy reef protects the coast, and also protects the health of the whole ecosystem, including humans. It can't be
overvalued. Please support Bill 167,and protect the future of this remarkable place.
Sincerely, N ,
