Dear Council,
I support Bill 167 because it prohibits non-mineral sunscreen being bought or used in
Hawaii. Please pass this bill because it will protect our coral reefs. Sunscreens are known to
pose a risk to coral reefs through a common ingredient called oxybenzone, but the precise
mechanisms underlying these toxic effects are not well understood.
The threat (a common ingrediant in sunscreen products) poses a grave risk to coral reefs is
well-established. So a number of governments around the world have banned sunscreens
containing oxybenzone. Hawaii become the first US state to ban this and other chemicals in
2021 . However Bill 167 makes plugs some holes in the past bill. Please pass this bill.
