Subject: Banning Non Mineral Sunscreen !
Testimony to Chair Rebecca Villegas, Co-Chair Heather Kimball, and members of the Committee on Climate Resilience&
Natural Management,
Please pass the bill banning the sale and use of the sunscreens that are killing our reefs with poisonous chemicals . The
sunscreen companies are fooling the people by saying " reef
friendly"on the label when in fact they contain oxybenzone among others.We have lost 90%of our cauliflower coral on the
Kona side and banning this sunscreen will help save
what's left. Healthy coral reefs protect our island's coastal infrastructure, beaches, and community. The chemical compounds
contained in non-mineral sunscreen inhibit coral growth
and degrade the integrity of our reefs. The purpose of this ordinance is to preserve the health, safety, and welfare of humans
and the environment, by allowing only mineral
sunscreens to be provided, sold, offered for sale, or distributed in the County.
