Honorable Chair, Vice Chair and the Committee Members,
My name is Tapani Vuori. I am the General Manager at Maui Ocean Center(www.mauioceancenter.com) and the
President of Maui Ocean Center Marine Institute(www.mocmarineinstitute.org). Ma'alaea Bay, Maui had coral
ecosystem coverage of 75%+ in 1995 (Steven Dollar study), in 2006 when DAR/DLNR surveyed the entire State they
estimated it to be 8%, as of today probably less than 5%. Dr. Craig Downs has done groundbreaking research on the
effects of benzoyl based sunscreens and their effect on coral. Data shows a very clear negative impact. I urge you to
consider emulating the Maui ordinance 5306 /bill 135 as it is the gold standard that should be emulated globally.
