Proposal: Veterinary Care and Spay& Neuter for Hawaii Family Pets
The KARES Board of Directors and Volunteers are grateful to the County of Hawaii for previous
non-profit grant awards and to this year's Grant in Aid, Ad-Hoc Committee for the their
recommendation of financial assistance to KARES for 2022-2023. Our proposal for this year will
bring positive changes to many sectors of our island community.
KARES program of Veterinary Care for Family Pets will focus on reaching residents who do not
have the financial resources to provide accessible veterinary care for their companion pets,
especially the elderly, economically-troubled, our veterans and homeless individuals. All
services will be free to pet owners. Those having trouble feeding their families often have little
to no resources remaining to care for their beloved companion pets that bring them comfort in
difficult times such as those the island is experiencing due to unemployment and the past years
of COVID pandemic restrictions. KARES program is one of compassion to preserve the Hawaiian
family that often includes one or more pets in a household.
For KARES program of Spay and Neuter Surgeries we will provde free spay/neuter surgery
clinics in community locations for dogs & cats to control and reduce the overpopulation of pets
on the island. Families will be able to keep the pets they have without the additional economic
burden of unwanted puppies or kittens for which they cannot afford to feed or provide
veterinary care. It will also help to reduce the deplorable abandonment of unwanted pets to
the wild to forage on their own. Spay/neuter procedures are the most humane method of pet
birth control and we commend the County of Hawaii for supporting this endeavor.

The number of free-roaming (stray) dogs will be reduced; those which cause damage to
property and livestock and can cause potential health risks due to bites and the spread of
disease.
At least 850-1000 families and their pets will be supported over the 12 month grant period to
achieve improved health for their companion pets, which translates to improved general health
of all island pets.To be served will be^' 500 for canine and feline spay/neuter procedures; —400
for basic medical services, and —50 for extensive emergency medical/surgical care.
The KARES dedicated team has previously demonstrated they can meet the challenges, and
have established collaborative efforts to accomplish our program for the benefit of the people
and their pets on Hawaii Island.
