Councilmember Sue Lee Loy, Chair, and members of the Human Services and Social Services Committee:
I would like to express my thanks to the County of Hawai`i and this year's Grant in Aid, Ad-Hoc Committee for any
financial assistance awarded to our efforts to reduce the overpopulation of dogs on Hawaii Island and minimize the
number of stray and abandoned dogs that cause distress and potential danger to our community.
We are a non-profit organization that have been working in and heavily embraced by our Community for many
years. We try to run without a lot of overhead so we can use the funds we receive on the animals and not
operations. Even though, we are able to move and help a lot of Community members and homeless dogs in our
Community. This year alone we have taken in almost 350 homeless/surrendered dogs from our Community thus
relieving the burden financially by fixing and medically treating those dogs and also keeping open facility space at
Hawaii County Animal Control.
We offer low cost or free spay and neuter to our community members every day and provide dog food and medical
care to our low income communities. We also offer medical help, food and spay/neuter to the pets of our homeless
community in downtown Hilo.
This grant recommendation is huge for us and we can and will provide many spay/neuter opportunities in our
community. We even pick up and drop off their dogs (due to lack of transportation)to get the surgeries done. We do
get spay/neuter surgeries at a much lower rate than most and thus the funds go even further than most.
Please help us as we continue to effect change in our community. We would love this opportunity to work in the
community, go house to house and talk to people and offer spay/neuter to our low income neighborhoods, and educate
and talk to people as we go.
