NJ May 27, 2022 Aloha Hawaii County Council Members, I am writing in support of Bill 160, and want to thank you all for your efforts in continuing to address the lack of affordable housing on the island. I have worked at various nonprofits on the island and have seen the effects unstable housing has on our communities and families. When any unexpected expense can impact the ability to cover rent or other basic needs, and families lose their housing, there are very few options for affordable housing, and instability becomes a crisis. We need to invest in creating affordable housing throughout the island so that families can stay in their communities, and parents are not having to travel for hours for employment. The cost of development has stifled production of affordable housing, and with the rapid escalation of rents, we all know there is very little inventory available now at any price. It is imperative for programs that support affordable housing production to be a priority, and that the council commit funds for long term development well into the future. Additionally, determine changes that can be made in zoning, building codes, and the permitting process to help to remove or mitigate any unnecessary or overly burdensome barriers that delay construction and increase costs. I support Bill 160 because I feel truly grateful to live on Hawaii Island, and to be a part of a community and culture that is so special here. Families who make their homes here need to have housing options that provide stability and security, and that is affordable into the future. Mahalo for your commitment to improve housing options here, Lori Ferrin Comm. No. 190. I r Ref.To: P ( COUnc,i Ref. Date JUN - 1 2022
