Aloha Council Members,
My name is Linden Pohland,a hospitality finance professional living in Kailua-Kona and a proud board member of Habitat for
Humanity Hawaii Island.
As a board member of Habitat for Humanity Hawaii Island, I support bill 160 as I support all efforts by the County Council to
increase funding for affordable housing. I thank you,the members of the County Council,for your efforts to address the
affordable housing crisis we find ourselves in now.
Bill 160 and other bills under consideration are the beginnings of a 10, 20, or 30 year effort correcting for an affordable
housing deficit that has been accumulating over decades. While$5
Million dollars is a lot of money, it cannot make up for lost years of investment.
Bill 160 is a great start. But there is more work for all of us to do. More money will need to be invested toward increasing
affordable housing inventory.Additionally, if we are going to
successfully build enough affordable housing,there will have to be other changes made:Changes in Zoning,Changes in
Building Codes,and maybe even restructuring of government
departments to create a strong focus on barrier busting when it comes to housing.
I support bill 160 and thank the County Council for taking action to build more affordable housing.
I and Habitat for Humanity for Humanity Hawaii Island look forward to working with you to ensure that there is affordable
housing for individuals and families at all stages of life and financial levels.
