AHUALOA COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION WRITTEN TESTIMONY

Dear Heather Kimball,
The Ahualoa Community Association needs 1 fire hydrant to properly protect our
neighborhood against life and property lost in case of a fire. Several years ago, the
DWS installed a water delivery system 4.5 miles above the town of Honokaa to
service Honokaa that was placed down our main road the distance of 4.5 miles. It
took quite some time to complete this project and disturbed the normal traffic
flow in our community for more than a year.
There was no foresight ahead of time to consider allowing for the very much
needed fire hydrants at that time. Just after the completion of the project on
December 13 2012, there was a fire in Ahualoa and a 56-year-old resident died in
that fire. Since then, with the help of the County, DWS, and the Fire Department,
2 new fire hydrants were installed. One is in a somewhat remote area of our
neighborhood that was near where the fire took the life of Mrs. Kong, and the
other 4 miles up from Honokaa on Old Mamalahoa hwy. Our community roads
are spread out in a triangular pattern and it has been determined that another
hydrant is needed in a densely populated area.
The ACA got together with you, the Fire Department and DWS on March 30, 2022
to determine the best possible placement for this hydrant. 46-3977,Old
Mamalahoa Hwy approximately 2 % mile above Honokaa was selected for its
proximity to many residents and its easy turn around area with good sight
distance for the fire trucks safety.
Please present our case to Council in an effort to gain their support and funding.
