- In both Heather's and my Written testimony we explained why it was important to only allow mineral-based
sunscreens, and this is it. when the state band the two chemicals from being sold in the state, the sunscreen
companies just changed the names of those two chemicals and then put reef safe stickers on their bottles so they
could still make their profit without any accountability and to deceiving the tourist and residents into thinking they
were doing the right thing when they were actually doing the same thing. Killing our reefs. By passing Bill 167 we can
guarantee that the sunscreen companies don't use this deceptive practice anymore and if they want to sell their
product they can sell a reef safe product by following the guidelines of Bill 167.
-Is the Profits of the sunscreen companies more valuable than our pristine coral reefs and our fish habitat that
support so many Island industries. I don't think so. Malama Kai.
-On the legality of whether it violates the state law, which I believe it does not. I am sure Maui looked into that when
they were passing their mineral-based sunscreen law. I would ask them that question. Maui council member Kelly
King
-For those who wanted more information about sunscreens I would suggest they watch the 11-minute video done by
the University of Hawaii called "reefs at risk". It's very informative.
-As one of the co-founders of the Coral Reef Education Institute here on the big island and in our ocean, We support
Bill 167.
--We went over to Maui to teach our Coral Courses and our in water Hawaii Coral ID course this weekend. The
picture below is of what they have done on Maui at their beaches after they passed Maui county Minftl-bad
sunscreen Bill 135. .
