Subject: Bill 167
To Chair Maile David and Co-Chair Aaron Chung and members of the County Council,
I am in Strong Support of Bill 167. Healthy coral reefs protect our island's coastal infrastructure, beaches, and
community. The chemical compounds contained in non-mineral sunscreen inhibit coral growth and degrade the
integrity of our reefs. The purpose of this ordinance is to preserve the health, safety, and welfare of humans and
the environment, by allowing only mineral sunscreens to be provided, sold, offered for sale, or distributed in the
County.
As a volunteer at with ReefTeach at Kahalu'u I can tell you from personal experience that visitors and kama'aina alike
want to do the right thing for the reef once educated. They purchase the toxic sunscreens that are sold here as being
reef friendly, not only confusing them or making them angry, but damaging the reef.
Please do the right thing for our reefs.
