Dear Council members:
I am writing in support of Bill 167 to allow only mineral.sunscreen (Zinc Oxide ancitn
Dioxide) to be used on Hawaii Island. "'

The reasons I support this bill are:
• Safer for people. The FDA proposes only non-nano Zinc Oxide and Titanium dioxide
are to be considered safe in humans. All other chemical sunscreen active ingredients
are considered NOT Generally Recognized As Safe And Effective (Not GRASE) by the
FDA.
• Safer for coral and marine life. Only non-nano Zinc Oxide and Titanium dioxide have
been proven generally safe for corals in laboratory studies. Many components of
chemical sunscreens have either been proven harmful to corals and other marine life in
the lab, or are suspected of being harmful, and have not been well-studied.
• The argument that we must protect ourselves with chemical sunscreens to avoid skin
cancer is not the only option. The best option--for us, our children, and our reef life--is
to wear protective clothing and use mineral sunscreens.
What you do matters, as an example for others around the world. Please vote in favor of Bill
167.
