More and more, we see critical consumer and environmental issues crossing jurisdictional boundaries requiring local leadership to step up and take action. Such is the case with the use of chemical sunscreens on our often overcrowded beaches and fragile reefs. Healthy coral reefs protect our island's coastal infrastructure, beaches, and community. The chemical compounds contained in non-mineral sunscreen inhibit coral growth and degrade the integrity of our reefs. This ordinance aims to preserve the health, safety, and welfare of humans and the environment by allowing only mineral sunscreens to be provided, sold, offered for sale, or distributed in the County. Please use your authority and take action! Mahalo, Rob Culbertson member, Big Island 'Reef Keepers' Hui Comm.No. ilk .2k02 Ref.To: P UV fl(A Ref. Date JUN - 1 2022 1
