Subject: In support of Bill 167, RELATING TO PROHIBITION OF NON-MINERAL SUNSCREEN
Aloha Chair Maile David, Co-Chair Aaron Chung, and members of the County Council,
I am a resident of Hawaii County and in strong support of Bill 167.
Healthy coral reefs protect our island's coastal infrastructure, beaches, and community. The chemical
compounds contained in non-mineral sunscreen inhibit coral growth and degrade the integrity of our reefs.
The purpose of this ordinance is to preserve the health, safety, and welfare of humans and the
environment, by allowing only mineral sunscreens to be provided, sold, offered for sale, or distributed in the
County.
The detrimental effects of chemical sunscreens have been known for a long time and it is time, in my
humble opinion, to do what we can to reduce their usage on and around our island. This ordinance seems
an excellent first step.
