Dear Chair Maile David and Co-Chair Aaron Chung,and the entire County Council: Please vote for Bill 167. Protecting our reefs
is imperative.They provide protection from storms,they provide food for subsistence fishers,jobs within the tourist industry
and both mental and physical recreation for all residents.They are also intrinsically beautiful and wonderous. Coral reefs are
an integral part of Hawaii and they are already degraded and are in serious danger of further damage. Non-mineral based
sunscreens are harmful to coral and other related marine life.They reduce the fecundity and resilience of corals and other
related marine organisms.They are also not necessary. Mineral based sunscreens work well to protect us from over exposure
to the sun's UV radiation.
Please vote to keep our Big Island of Hawaii reefs as safe as we possibly can by only allowing mineral based sunscreens.
