I am in Honaunau or Kahalu'u Bays on Big Island several times per week for long snorkel swims. Both bays are very popular,
with large crowds there every day. Many are applying sunscreens right before going in and we try to educate as much as
possible that it will be washed off immediately and likely not needed early in the AM but you can only talk to a few per
week. For those that burn easily, I get my visitors to wear a protective shirt rather than sunscreen as it will give better
protection and doesn't require multiple applications.
Reef Teach has made great progress at Kahalu'u Bay and those corals are looking healthier all the time. Corals at Honaunau
Bay are mostly dead for about 50 feet from Two Step and those are the areas most contaminated by sunscreens. Further out
the corals look very healthy but that's in areas where few go with their sunscreens on.
I would love to see maybe a 10 min educational show on the planes that arrive to Hawaii showing some basic good behavior
rules and ways to decreased their damages. Like not approaching the turtles, monk seals and dolphins. Maybe wearing a
shirt. Not walking on the moss and algae at the water's edge(for safety and honu). How the garbage systems work. Tourist
and Kama aina alike could benefit.
