Aloha e Chair David, Co-Chair Chung and members of the County Council,
I grew up snorkeling and scuba diving in the waters of Kona. When I was a keiki (not thhhhhhaaaaatttt long ago) I would often
go to some of my favorite beaches with my family and we would be sharing the beach with just a few other'ohana. In just my
lifetime, our tourist numbers have skyrocketed and typically on any Kona beach adventure we now are hunting for a space to
put out a beach towel and bumping into bodies in the ocean. The impact that all these humans have had with their lotions and
shampoos and sunscreens runoff has been extreme and there is no way our ocean organisms can possibly adapt to that
amount of foreign bombardment so quickly. We need real, tangible limits on all ocean activity— and fast.We need education
encouraging tourists and local families alike to use less of ALL skin and hair products before entering sensitive costal waters.
We need to encouraging showering BEFORE entering the water(like is done at some public pools and hot tubs)and utilize
natural (mycelium and algae and mineral based)filtration systems to capture the chemicals and toxins people rinse off their
bodies in the showers so it doesn't just drain directly to the sea. Bill 167 is just one more small step towards protecting our
ec
pr iio
us natural resources that all ocean life is dependent on.
I am in Strong Support of Bill 167. Healthy coral reefs protect our island's coastal infrastructure, beaches, and community. The
chemical compounds contained in non-mineral sunscreen inhibit coral growth and degrade the integrity of our reefs. The
purpose of this ordinance is to preserve the health, safety, and welfare of humans and the environment, by alkevingly
mineral sunscreens to be provided, sold, offered for sale,or distributed in the County.
Mahalo nui loa for your consideration,
Shannon Matsoncy
