Subject: Testimony in strong support of Bill 167
Aloha Chair Maile David, Co-Chair Aaron Chung, and members of the County of Hawaii's Council:
Please receive my written testimony in strong support of Bill 167, an ordinance amending Chapter 14 of the Hawaii
County Code 1983 (2016 Edition, as amended), by adding a new article relating to prohibition of non-mineral
sunscreen.
Protection of the remaining coral reefs is vital to the health of our planetary ecosystems and continuation of human
and other life forms. At this pivotal moment in history we have the kuleana as human beings to right the harms we've
done to the living world through small and large actions and important decisions such as support of this bill, opting
for a healthy and life affirming path forward.
Healthy coral reefs protect our island's coastal infrastructure, beaches, and community. The chemical compounds
contained in non-mineral sunscreen inhibit coral growth and degrade the integrity of our reefs. This ordinance aims to
preserve the health, safety, and welfare of humans and the environment by allowing only mineral sunscreens to be
provided, sold, offered for sale, or distributed in the County.
I submit my testimony in strong support of Bill 167.
Mahalo for your consideration.

"Once upon a time, when women were birds, there was the simple understanding that to sing at dawn, and to sing at dusk,
was to heal the world through joy.The birds still remember what we have forgotten, that the world is meant to be
celebrated."
