To: e., Chair Rebecca Villegas Co-Chair Heather Kimball Members of the County Council: X' I.am writing in support of Bill 167 to ban non-mineral sunscreens from being sold in the County of Hawaii. I moved to Oahu in 1966 and loved the beaches, the snorkeling, the coral, and all things that make up life in Hawaii. Although I moved to the mainland a decade later I have returned to visit the Big Island many times, predominantly from the mid-1990s right up to today. Over that time I witnessed the degradation of our coral reefs. I also witnessed the start of recovery post-COVID. The huge reduction of people, and non-mineral sunscreen in the water was almost miraculous, demonstrating the accuracy of the supporting science. In order to preserve our reefs and to let them grow again we must prevent environmental degradation, especially the use of non-mineral sunscreen. There are proven and safe alternatives to the chemicals currently used in most sunscreens which wreak havoc on our reefs. Other jurisdictions have seen the truth in the science and are banning non-mineral sunscreens, including our neighbors on Maui. I strongly urge you to protect our reefs by passing Bill 167. Thank you for your consideration. Stilson Snow www.stilsonsnow.com Comm. No. —111•ttOCI Ref.To: P(Louhcil Ref. Date JUN - 1 2022
