Aloha Chair Maile David and Co-Chair Aaron Chung and members of the County Council,
Although I am currently not on the island I am in Strong Support of B111167. Healthy coral reefs
protect our island's coastal infrastructure, beaches, and community. The chemical compounds contained in
non-mineral sunscreen inhibit coral growth and degrade the integrity of our reefs. Having volunteered with
Kahaluu Bay Education Center for many years I personally have witnessed the damage caused by
sunscreens to the Kahaluu Bay and other island reefs. The purpose of this ordinance is to preserve the
health, safety, and welfare of humans and the environment, by allowing only mineral sunscreens to be
provided, sold, offered for sale, or distributed in the County.
