Every day, sunscreens that are damaging our coral reefs are being used and washed into our ocean. The chemicals used within these non-mineral sunscreens destroy existing reefs and inhibits the growth of new corals. Healthy coral reefs are vital to supporting the communities that surround them in ways such as supporting health reef ecosystems, providing food to communities, and infrastructure support to coastal areas. The purpose of this ordinance is to preserve the health, safety, and welfare of humans and the environment, by allowing only mineral sunscreens to be provided, sold, offered for sale,or distributed in the County. Mineral sunscreens effectively protect the health of humans while also keeping the environment which supports them in mind. I fully support Bill 167.
