Subject: Bill 167 AN ORDINANCE AMENDING CHAPTER 14 OF THE HAWAI'I COUNTY CODE 1983
PROHIBITION OF NON-MINERAL SUNSCREEN
Dear Council members.
I am a regular visitor to the Big Island and have done so for the last 20 years. I volunteer for the Reef Teach
program at Kahaluu Bay.I have interacted with hundreds, if not thousands, of visitors from around the world. In
explaining the benefit of non-mineral sunscreen, visitors are most receptive and supportive of the bill.
I am in Strong Support of Bill 167. Healthy coral reefs protect our island's coastal infrastructure, beaches, and
community. The chemical compounds contained in non-mineral sunscreen inhibit coral growth and degrade the
integrity of our reefs. The purpose of this ordinance is to preserve the health, safety, and welfare of humans and
the environment, by allowing only mineral sunscreens to be provided,sold, offered for sale, or distributed in the
County.
