Chair Maile David, Co-Chair Aaron Chung and members of the County Council,
My wife and I have been coming to the Big Island almost every year since 2000. One of the main attractions has always been
the easy access to great snorkeling. Sadly, the Big Island reefs are not what they were 10 years ago. We know this is not
entirely due to harmful sunscreens, but we think every step should be taken that can allow the reefs to become fully healthy
again. One such step would be the adoption of Bill 167*.
The purpose of this ordinance is to preserve the health, safety, and welfare of humans and the environment, by allowing only
mineral sunscreens to be provided, sold, offered for sale,or distributed in the County. Healthy coral reefs protect the island's
coastal infrastructure, beaches, and community. The chemical compounds contained in non-mineral sunscreen inhibit coral
growth and degrade the integrity of Hawaii's reefs.
We strongly support Bill 167.
