I am in strong support of Bill 167 which will prohibit sale and/or distribution of non-mineral sunscreen in Hawaii.The island and
state must do more to keep our reefs healthy in order to protect our beaches,sea life,coastal infrastructure and citizens.Sunscreen
containing toxic chemicals inhibit coral growth and lessen the strength and longevity our reef systems.
While prohibiting the sale of sunscreen containing oxybenzone and octinoxate early this year was a good start, many sunscreens
displayed and sold in Hawaii contain several other toxic chemicals and no minerals,yet claim to be reef safe or reef friendly. This is
misleading to consumers. Further, in addition to many specialty brands, most of the big label manufacturers have a mineral based
product,easing transition way from distribution of harmful sunscreens.
This bill should be considered low hanging fruit-low cost/high rewards. Please vote in favor of Bill 167.
