HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 453 Draft 01 2020-2022A RESOLUTION TRANSFERRING/APPROPRIATING AN APPROPRIATION OUT AND FROM A DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT AND CREDITING SAME TO A DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT TO PROVIDE A GRANT TO THE DAUGHTERS OF
HAWAIʻI TO ASSIST WITH EXPENSES RELATED TO PRESERVATION OF THE ROYAL BANYAN TREE PLANTED BY QUEEN KAPIʻOLANI AT THE HULIHEʻE PALACE.
WHEREAS, the Daughters of Hawaiʻi is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to perpetuate the memory and spirit of old Hawaiʻi and to preserve the nomenclature and correct
pronunciation of the Hawaiian language; and
WHEREAS, in the 1880s, the Royal Banyan Tree at the Huliheʻe Palace in Kona was planted by Queen Kapiʻolani from a cutting taken from a banyan tree at ʻIolani Palace in Honolulu, which
was a gift from Indian royalty to Queen Kapiʻolaniʻs husband, King Kalakaua; and
WHEREAS, the Royal Banyan Tree at Huliheʻe Palace is a major feature and landmark of the Historic Kailua Village that requires a complete examination and extensive trimming to preserve
its legacy and minimize any hazards to the community; and
WHEREAS, the Daughters of Hawaiʻi is requesting funds to assist with epenses related to an examination, extensive trim, and preservation of the Royal Banyan Tree planted by Queen Kapiʻolani
at Huliheʻe Palace; and
WHEREAS, the Department of Liquor Control supports programs that provide educational activities, and community events in a drug-free and alcohol-free environment, such as the preservation
efforts toward the Royal Banyan tree at theHuliheʻe Palace; and
WHEREAS, pursuant to Section 2-139(a)(2)(A) of the Hawai‘i County Code, Contingency Relief funds shall be transferred to an accepting County department/agency via resolution identifying
the nonprofit organization and the specific program, project, event, activity, service, equipment, materials, or supplies for which the grant shall be used; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAI‘I that Contingency Relief funds from Council District 7 will be appropriated to the Department of Liquor Control to provide a grant
to Daughters of Hawaiʻi to assist with expenses related to the preservation of the Royal Banyan Tree at the Huliheʻe Palace.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the County of Hawai‘i hereby transfers/appropriates the following amount as set forth below:
