Subject: Public Testimony- Resolution 440-22
I am generally against making new laws in the immediate emotional aftermath of a major well-publicized tragic
event. Laws made during these periods tend to be over reactive and unnecessarily limit personal freedoms. There are
many examples of this throughout our history. That being said, I am generally in favor of all provisions of resolution
440-22 except for the minimum age requirement of 21 years. As long as one is old enough to vote, serve in the
military, and pay taxes they should be considered an "adult" and able to enjoy all the privileges and responsibilities
therein.
I was fortunate to have grown up at a time at when it was possible to both purchase alcohol and firearms at or below
the age of 18. At least Australia and New Zealand—2 of the countries cited in the resolution preamble - have lower
age limits for possession and purchase of firearms (18)than what is being proposed by this resolution (2 1)
Given the mostly rural nature for much of the state, it seems bizarre to me that even a young farmer could be
prohibited from purchasing a firearm. Living on a farm in a rural community having a firearm is pretty much
considered essential.
