Subject: Support Bill 167 AN ORDINANCE AMENDING CHAPTER 14 OF THE HAWAII COUNTY CODE
1983 (2016 EDITION, AS AMENDED), BY ADDING A NEW ARTICLE RELATING TO
PROHIBITION OF NON-MINERAL SUNSCREEN
Aloha,
My Name is Linda M. Ando and I am in Strong Support of Bill 167. The coral reef is the rainforest of our
ocean. Planktons provide 50% of each breath we take and is the vital beginnings of our food chain in the ocean
and on land!
Healthy coral reefs protect our island's coastal infrastructure, beaches, and community. The chemical compounds
contained in non-mineral sunscreen inhibit coral growth and degrade the integrity of our reefs. The purpose of
this ordinance is to preserve the health, safety, and welfare of humans and the environment, by allowing only
mineral sunscreens to be provided, sold, offered for sale, or distributed in the County. We can protect both human
and coral health with this Bill 167

Some effects of non-mineral
sunscreens on people, oceans,
corals & other marine life
Scientists have demonstrated that
non-mineral sunscreens can interfere
with normal child development.
Non-mineral sunscreens can cause
coral bleaching and death.
Anything that eats fish (turtles,
dolphins, migratory birds, humans,
etc...) can have non-mineral
sunscreens in their bodies.
Non-mineral sunscreens do not
protect against skin cancer.
Use only mineral-based sunscreens!
