Mineral based sunscreen is absolutely the only type of sunscreen that should be allowed for sale on Hawaii island. As soon as someone books our tour they receive an email on the importance of using mineral based sunscreens. Yet when they arrive at our shop and we offer them zinc oxide based sunscreen they are immediately discouraged. To find out the sunscreen that they brought was advertised as "reef safe"or"reef friendly"when it actually is not is extremely misleading and frustrating. Oftentimes these guests have already applied chemical sunscreen that only perpetuates the abuse that the coral off of our coastline suffers from on a daily basis. Every single day we hear the line "I waited until I arrived in Hawai'i to even buy sunscreen because we thought if it was sold here them it was reef safe and the bottle even says it is." We are only one tour company who educates anywhere from 6 to 150 people a day. With an average of over 37,900 people arriving to our island every single day we hardly make a dent. Not to mention the residents who honestly believe they are buying sunscreen that is safe for the reefs. Obviously protecting our skin is important. But there is a perfectly good alternative to chemical based sunscreen that works great and is better for people and the planet.
