Aloha ,
Hui Ohana O Honaunau has come together to help protect and preserve our aina, our waters and
fisheries in the Honaunau area from continued deterioration due to many factors mainly caused by overuse
of our limited natural resources that are daily overrun by tourists arriving by land and by sea.
One way we can help our reefs is by supporting the passage of County of Hawaii Bill 167 banning
the sale of non-mineral sunscreens on Hawaii Island.
Bill 167 will ban the sale non-mineral sunscreens that contain Oxybenzone and Octinoxate, on Hawaii
Island because they contribute to coral bleaching which effectively kills the coral.
Mineral sunscreens using zinc oxide or Titanium Dioxide are just as effective and don't harm the
environment!
It may not seem like much but every person we can educate about the harm these chemicals do to our
reefs, to the fish, to the folks who eat these fish goes a long way.
We implore our Hawaii County Council to pass this bill.
