Subject: Strong Support Bill 167
Aloha e Hawaii County Council,
I am writing to show my STRONG SUPPORT for Bill 167.
As an island community, healthy nearshore marine ecosystems are critical to the health of our communities
economically, ecologically, socially, and culturally. Healthy reefs protect our coastlines, generate millions of dollars
in revenue for our economy, and provide social and intrinsic value that cannot be enumerated.
Many reefs in Hawaii are chronically stressed from pollution, overfishing and direct human impact. We are reaching
a tipping point where if we do not make decisions that put the health of these ecosystems first, we will lose them and
all the benefits they provide, leaving future generations to deal with an unthinkable problem.
Research shows that reducing local stressors on nearshore marine ecosystems can increase their resilience to larger-
scale stressors like climate change that are much harder to address. Bill 167 is a logical step to take to reduce a local
stressor to the reef.
Another important part of this issue is that currently the FDA only recognizes ZINC OXIDE and TITANIUM
DIOXIDE as safe and effective sunscreen ingredients. Passing this bill would be in alignment with the FDA.
Passing Bill 167 will show that Hawaii County is a leader in taking action to preserve and protect our precious
natural resources for future generations.
