Subject: Strong support for Bill 167
Aloha Chair Maile David, Co-Chair Aaron Chung and members of the County
Council!
The science on the hazards of chemical sunscreens on aquatic organisms is
getting clearer everyday, even as new questions on 'unanticipated' side effects
continue to emerge. I would like to add into the record the following research
on ecotoxiciology with citations as published in the May 6, 2022 edition of
"Science" magazine. (pp. 578, 644)
In a featured article titled, "SUNSTRUCK - Sunscreen turns toxic in cells of
reef inhabitants", the author discusses some of the biochemical mechanisms
"increasing the mortality rates of stressed corals", as well as for other
heretofore unstudied marine organisms such as sea anemone. And, though
much of the research thus far has centered around the chemical 'Oxybenzone',
researchers note that "many commercial sunscreens contain structurally
related chemicals", [therefore]..."understanding metabolite phototoxicity...[is
needed] to facilitate the development of coral-safe products" (Vuckovic et al.)
The timely takeaway from this article: the research..."should inform policy
decisions for regulating sunscreen use within reefs and sensitive coastal
ecosystems globally."
Gentlepersons of the Council, you should not duck your duty in this matter. If
any hesitation remains, you should err on the side of caution. You have this
power. Please use it today!
Please pass Bill 167 (with amendments as necessary that remain faithful to its
intent.)
