Aloha Chair David and Hawaii County Council,
On behalf of the Kohanaiki 'Ohana we are submitting this testimony in strong support of Bill 167 to
add a new chapter to the Hawaii County Code prohibiting the sales and distribution of non-mineral
sunscreens.
The Kohanaiki 'Ohana is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization which formed in 1991 to help protect our
natural and cultural resources and fragile reef ecosystems along the Kohanaiki and O'oma shoreline.
Our efforts have led to the creation of the 100+ acre Shoreline Park at Kohanaiki and the acquisition
of over 300 acres along the O'oma coastline for Open Space.
Our reef ecosystems are under stress due to both environmental and human impacts, and it is
imperative that we do all we can to contribute to their restoration and rejuvenation. Bill 167 will
help protect the health of our reefs for future generations!
