Mahalo for this opportunity.
My name is Maki Morinoue and I am in Strong Support of Bill 167.
We see Betty Crocker, Duncan Hines, Jolly Ranchers, starting to offer Sugar-free & Keto options,
that's no grain, sugar and is gluten free. It is with the power of the consumer we can continue to
support any company willing to make Pono changes to support life on this planet.
Most importantly we must remember that the coral reef is the rainforest of our ocean and it plays a
vital role in plankton heath and its symbiotic relationships to life small and large in our ocean and on
land. 50% of the oxygen we take in with every breath is provided by plankton. Runoff, sewage
spills and warming of our ocean plays a massive role in ocean health and yet TODAY, we can
address one massive stressor that is directly tied to coral reproduction decline and death. Today we
can vote in Bill 167 and decide what we purchase in our store shelves is important to impact our sun
care behaviors and rituals and choices to support Hawai'i nei for generations to come.
I have learned that the thought process of"'i'm not going into the ocean' or" I'm going into the pool'
and that won't harm the ocean is also false. All chemicals runoff into our ocean from the pool,
showers and general land runoff. The mis-marketing of'Reef Safe'which I have fallen into is
dangerous to our bodies and to coral.
There is an opportunity to sell other sun protective gear, made in Hawai'i and educate people on
when are the best times to go in the sun, especially if skin cancer is a concern.
I ask all of you, at what cost are we allowing chemicals to flood our bays in order for corporations to
profit and use skin cancer patience as an excuse when it takes very little of this chemical to do
significant and permanent damage for our future generations through breast milk, hormone
disruptions while grossly impacting vital symbiotic relationships in our ocean ecology.
There is only one way to vote today that is in alignment with our state motto to live with nature in a
thriving and regenerative manner for generations to come.

For those that VOTE not in support of Bill 167, 1 am very curious to know why and the scientific
backings along with ocean ecological impact that drew your decisions so I can think about your
perspective.
