Subject: Sunscreen Legislation
Aloha Hawaii County Council members,
We strongly support Bill 167 which amends Chapter 14 of the Hawaii County Code 1983, by adding a new article
relating to the prohibition of non-mineral sunscreens.
The health of our coral reef ecosystems is vital to our state's economic and ecological health. Healthy coral reefs
protect our island's coastal infrastructure, beaches, and community. The chemical compounds contained in non-
mineral sunscreen inhibit coral growth and degrade the integrity of our reefs. The purpose of this bill is to preserve
the health, safety, and welfare of humans and the environment, by allowing only mineral sunscreens to be provided,
sold, offered for sale, or distributed in the County. We ask for your strong support.
As you know, a similar bill was passed for Maui County. We applaud them for recognizing the critical nature of this
issue and acting on it. We are hopeful that Hawaii County will do the same.
Thank you for your attention to this issue which is of such vital importance to a healthy Hawaii.
Sincerely,
r
