Council Members,
As Chair of the East Hawaii Cultural Venter far the past six yews, and a professional artist far the last fifty, Z support
Bill 175, establishing a Youth Commission. Hawaii has a unique relationship to the arts: Our island has a profoundly
creative cultural community, but our young people have very limited pathways to gain access to rich, creative
professional lives. Understanding how our communities have distinctly and separately generated cultural,
conceptual, and decorative arts, will support the development of programs and opportunities to bridge that
generational gap. Over the past thirty years I've witnessed outstanding talented children in our annual Young at Art
exhibition, all too of en moving off island to seek careers. EHCC will be an ally to the proposed Youth Commission
with an eye to supporting opportunities for our youth and enriching our communities.
